IPFire Minimum Hardware Requirements

Step-By-Step IPFire Setup
You need to download ipfire installer on their website before installing IPFire. The installation file is an iso format. You can burn file to cd or dvd and you are ready to install ipfire.

Insert ipfire installation cd to begin the installation. It must be the first boot device to install ipfire.

Select Install IPFire
Select the language you want to install ipfire.
Start the ipfire installation by click start installation.
Accept the ipfire licence agreement.
It will detect the available hard disk you have on your system. It prompts you to delete all the data on your hard disk. Click on delete all data.
Select the file system needed for the ipfire installation. Set it to default to be safe unless you know what you are doing.
IPFire will begin its installation. Wait for several minutes and it will prompts you to restart when finished.
Reboot your computer.
Start IPFire Setup. Select the default setup.
Choose the type of keyboard you are using.
Specify the timezone for ipfire.
You can specify the machine's host name for the ipfire.
Enter the name of your domain if you have. Or if you want a different aside from the default, you can specify it here.
Enter your root and admin password. The root password will be used upon logging in to ipfire during start-up. The admin password will be used if you want to access ipfire via web browser.
On the network configuration menu, select network configuration type.
If you have two lan cards, choose green+red or if you have 3 lan cards choose green+red+orange and so on..
On Drivers and card assignments, for this example we setup two lan cards. Choose which card you want to setup first.
For green interface, choose which lab card to use. The same process also if you want to assign the other lan card to the second interface which is red.
When you are done assigning all lan cards to its interface, Select done to commit changes.
On the Address settings, choose the interface you want to setup.
Assign an IP address for the first lan card. This will be the lan ip address of your ipfire firewall. This ip address is accessible via web browser for setting up ipfire.
For the second interface red, this will be the WAN interface that will get connection to the internet. If you have static internet ip address, then specify it or if your internet provider is dhcp, select dhcp. Then select ok.
Setup DNS and gateway settings.
Set the DNS if your WAN interface red is static. You can also specify DNS even if WAN is DHCP.
Configure DHCP server. If you want ipfire to the DHCP server on your network, enable it. Specify the start and end address of the dhcp server.
You will be prompt to restart ipfire when finishing the setup. Just provide the root password when logging in ipfire. After log in to ipfire console, you can now setup ipfire using web browser using the lan ip address green you set up earlier.
